Key Issues

PIEMAN is performing very ambitious physical layer research. Particular technical challenges are:

• Development of 10 Gbit/s transmitters which in volume could be consistent with access network cost targets
• Developing a 10 Gbit/s burst-mode receiver for use at the headend of the PON
• Developing tunable transmitters which in volume could be consistent with access network cost targets
• Obtaining all-optical operation of the system over 100 km, including with reflective ONU approach

Clearly PIEMAN is setting extremely ambitious technical goals and so the project has identified contingency plans.
